A well-maintained vehicle not only keeps you on the road, but will operate with better fuel efficiency and have a higher trade-in or resale value. Here's our recommendations for basic servicing intervals to keep the average vehicle running at its best.
Regular oil changes keep your engine lubricated, reducing friction and preventing wear on vital components. They also help remove dirt, debris, and sludge that can build up over time and harm engine performance. By maintaining clean oil, you extend the life of your engine, improve fuel efficiency, and avoid costly repairs.
Modern vehicles are equipped with an Oil Life Monitor that helps to gauge the remaining life left in your engine oil based on several factors like temperature and driving conditions. While this is a handy feature, it provides a guideline only and should not be solely relied upon. The Oil Life Monitor does not measure your vehicle's actual oil level either - you still need to check the dipstick to see if you are getting low. Average oil consumption is 1 litre for every 3,200 km driven for the typical commuter.
We recommend you get an oil change done when your Oil Life Monitor is reading at 30%. However, oil changes should be done once a year at minimum, regardless of how much the vehicle has been driven. If your vehicle displays a "CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON" message, you should have it done as soon as possible - at least within the next 1000 km.
In order to keep all factory warranty and extended coverages valid, you'll need to perform scheduled maintenance on your vehicle. General Motors recommendations are found in your vehicle's Owner's Manual and at the bare minimum you need to follow the severe intervals.
Vehicles that operate in industrial environments (e.g. forestry, mining) will generally require more frequent servicing due to the risk or water/mud intrusion and the heavier duty being performed compared to the average commuter car.
Our recommendations listed below are strictly based on the history of all vehicles coming into our Service Department for repair/maintenance.
